ONLY 7% of child sexual abuse perpetrators are strangers.

93% of children who are sexually abused are abused by people that they know.

Stranger danger is a concept that parents and schools have taught for generations. I, personally, have not been in grade school in over 30 years. But even then, stranger danger was taught. Of course, back then it was always about a creepy guy in a van that had candy, or a puppy.

Over the years, Stranger Danger awareness has changed little. We still tell our children the same things that our parents told us.

Be wary of strangers.

Don’t take rides from strangers.

Don’t take candy from strangers.

Don’t go into a public bathroom with a stranger.

Fast forward a few years, to my now 22-year-old entering grade school. He too is taught stranger danger, in some form or fashion. The safe houses, that had once been in my town, are now gone. But kids are taught to go to the police station, fire station and the like. We lived in a ridiculously small rural town, so our kids also knew that they could go to the local grocery store. Which had been owned and operated by the same family for decades. The family, knew everyone in town, and everyone knew them.
